AORTIC 2009 Conference
The AORTIC 2009 conference that was held recently in Dar Es Salaam, attracted over 700 delegates – the vast majority from 34 of the 52 countries in Africa. Other participants and speakers were from the USA, UK, Canada, India, Brazil, Europe and Qatar. We had a live Laprascopic Radical Hysterectomy surgical workshop which was performed at the Muhimbili Hospital, 5 pre-conference workshops, 5 Meet the Experts sessions, 6 Key Note Lectures and 6 Plenaries that were all simultaneously translated into French, 10 one and a half hour workshops and 10 three hour workshops. The conference addressed the issues of National Cancer Control programmes, Palliative Care, Oncology Nursing, HPV vaccines, Cancer Biology, Paediatric Oncology, AIDs related malignancies, Radiation Therapy and Chemotherapy in low resource settings, Psyco-social aspects of cancer and Paediatric Oncology, among others. Site specific cancers included Cancer of the Cervix, Breast, Prostate and other Urological cancers, Haematological Cancers, Cancer of the Oesophagus and Tobacco related Cancers, inter alia. A key note lecture by Dr Max Parkin and a 3 hour workshop was dedicated to Cancer Registries.

We received 370 submitted abstracts, of which 72 were selected for oral presentation by a peer review committee using a rigorous scoring system.

The conference was designed to give both depth and breadth to all subjects and sufficient time and space for participants to interact with the speakers and one another during sessions. There was in addition time given for networking over teas, lunches and evening social events.
